Sexual Purity

Sexual purity is key to Holiness. A nation whose people are unchaste, is an impure and immodest nation. If Israel is to be a nation of G-d, it must act that way--lest it behave like everyone else, that none would understand for what it Was Chosen.

Don't act like the nations: "Hashem Spoke to Moses, Saying: Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: I Am Hashem, your Judge. Do not perform the practice of the land of egypt in which you dwelled; and do not perform the practice of the land of Canaan to which I Bring you, and do not follow their traditions. Carry out My Laws and safeguard My Decrees to follow them; I Am Hashem, your Judge. You shall observe My Decrees and My Laws, which man shall carry out and by which he shall live--I Am Hashem." (Leviticus 18:1-5).

No adultery: "You shall not lie carnally with your neighbor's wife, to contaminate yourself with her." (Leviticus 18:20). "A man who will commit adultery with a man's wife, who will commit adultery with his fellow's wife; the adulterer and the adulteress shall be put to death." (Leviticus 20:10).

No relations in family: "Any man shall not approach his close relative to uncover nakedness; I Am Hashem." (Leviticus 18:6). "You shall sanctify yourselves and you will be Holy, for I Am Hashem, your Judge." (Leviticus 20:7).

No relations with father or mother: "The nakedness of your father and the nakedness of your mother you shall not uncover; she is your mother, you shall not uncover her nakedness." (Leviticus 18:7). The punishment for lying with your father or mother is death, in all circumstances.

No relations with wife of father: "The nakedness of your father's wife you shall not uncover; it is your father's shame." (Leviticus 18:8). "'Accursed is one who lies with the wife of his father, for he will have uncovered the robe of his father.' And the entire people shall say, 'Amen.'" (Deuteronomy 27:20). "A man who shall lie with his father's wife will have uncovered his father's shame; the two of them shall be put to death, their blood is upon themselves." (Leviticus 20:11). This speaks of a person's step-mother; to commit adultery with her is death, even after she is divorced or widowed, it is death--for she might be the mother of his brother. "A man shall not marry the wife of his father; and he shall not uncover the robe of his father." (Deuteronomy 22:1).

No relations with sister (or brother): "The nakedness of your sister--whether your father's daughter or your mother's daughter, whether born to one who may remain in the home or born to one who must remain outside of it--you shall not uncover their nakedness." (Leviticus 18:9). "The nakedness of your father's wife's daughter who was born to your father--she is your sister; you shall not uncover her nakedness." (Leviticus 18:11). "'Accursed is one who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.' And the entire people shall say, 'Amen.'" (Deuteronomy 27:22). "A man who shall take his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother, and he shall see her nakedness and she shall see his nakedness, it is a disgrace and they shall be cut off in the sight of the members of their people; he will have uncovered the nakedness of his sister, he shall bear his iniquity." (Leviticus 20:17). They cannot get married, and it is a sin for them to have children. They should be killed or expelled from Israel. However, the daughter of your father's wife who was not born of your father, is not considered your sister--for she is neither the daughter of your father nor of your mother.

No relations with grandchildren: "The nakedness of your son's daughter or your daughter's daughter--you shall not uncover their nakedness; for they are your own shame." (Leviticus 18:10). It is the same as parents lying with their children.

No relations with in-laws: "The nakedness of your daughter-in-law you shall not uncover; she is your son's wife, you shall not uncover her nakedness." (Leviticus 18:15). "A man who shall lie with his daughter-in-law, the two of them shall be put to death; they have committed a perversion, their blood is upon themselves." (Leviticus 20:12). The same applies for a son-in-law. "'Accursed is one who lies with his mother-in-law.' And the entire people shall say, 'Amen.'" (Deuteronomy 27:23). It is the same as parents lying with their children, for the children of your daughter-in-law are your grandchildren. "The nakedness of a woman and her daughter you shall not uncover; you shall not take her son's daughter or her daughter's daughter to uncover her nakedness--they are close relatives, it is a deprived plot." (Leviticus 18:17). "A man who shall take a woman and her mother, it is a deprived plot; they shall burn him and them in fire, and there shall be no depravity among you." (Leviticus 20:14).

No relations with aunt, uncle, or in-law: "The nakedness of your father's sister you shall not uncover; she is your father's flesh. The nakedness of your mother's sister you shall not uncover; for she is your mother's flesh. The nakedness of your father's brother you shall not uncover; do not approach his wife, she is your aunt." (Leviticus 18:12-14). "The nakedness of your mother's sister or your father's sister shall you not uncover, for that is baring one's own flesh; they shall bear their iniquity. And a man who shall lie with his aunt will have uncovered the nakedness of his uncle; they shall bear their sin, they shall die childless." (Leviticus 20:19-20). The wife of your uncle, of the brother of your father, is your aunt; as she is your father's sister-in-law. "The nakedness of your brother's wife you shall not uncover; it is your brother's shame." (Leviticus 18:16). "A man who shall take his brother's wife, it is loathsome; he will have uncovered his brother's shame, they shall be childless." (Leviticus 20:21). "You shall not take a woman in addition to her sister, to make them rivals, to uncover the nakedness of one upon the other in her lifetime." (Leviticus 18:18).

An aunt or uncle is considered the flesh of your parent; it is like lying with your parent. And the wife of your uncle is considered like the wife of your father--it is the same punishment. The wife of your brother is like your sister, for her children are your nephews--it is a sin to have children with her. But if she bears no children for your brother, and your brother dies or divorces her, then she remains removed from you--although to touch her is to shame your brother, for you would become like rivals. While your brother is still alive, it is a sin to be with her, and after your brother is dead it is a sin upon his memory, unless her household would bear the name of your brother and succeed his memory. Likewise, you can't take the sister of your wife, while your wife is alive, for you would make them rivals.

Cloning: If a person should ever be cloned, it would be considered like the identical twin of that person. This would complicate things much more than adopted children, for the clone is removed from time; from the history of a bloodline. The Laws are such that people would not inbreed and narrow their bloodline--for not only is this shameful to your relative, it is also a perversion that would bring out genetic defects. Children with broader bloodlines are born healthier, more well-rounded, and thus better looking. Cloning people is a regression of progress that would narrow the bloodline and decrease diversity, causing societies to inbred and break the Laws of G-d--it is perversion and should not be done.

Contaminated woman: "You shall not approach a woman in her time of unclean separations, to uncover her nakedness." (Leviticus 18:19). "A man who shall lie with a woman in her affliction and has uncovered her nakedness, he will have bared her source and she has bared the source of her blood; the two of them will be cut off from the midst of their people." (Leviticus 20:18). They will be contaminated for a seven day period.

No abominations or perversions: "You shall not lie with a man as one lies with a woman, it is an abomination. Do not lie with any animal to be contaminated with it; a woman shall not stand before an animal for mating, it is a perversion." (Leviticus 18:22-23). "A man who lies with a man as one lies with a woman, they have both done an abomination; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon themselves." (Leviticus 20:13). A man who is attracted to men should think of himself as a monk, or face his death, as this Law will never change. Should he decide to marry a woman and raise children, then he can live a good life. But if he commits an abomination in Israel, he will die. "A man who shall lie with an animal shall be put to death; and you shall kill the animal. And a woman who approaches any animal for it to mate with her, you shall kill the woman and the animal; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them." (Leviticus 20:15). "'Accursed is one who lies with any animal,' And the entire people shall say, 'Amen.'" (Deuteronomy 27:21). "Anyone who lies with an animal shall surely be put to death." (Exodus 22:18).

The Holiness of Land: "Do not become contaminated through any of these; for through all of these the nations that I Expel before you became contaminated. The Land became contaminated and I Recalled its iniquity upon it; and the Land disgorged its inhabitants. But you shall safeguard My Decrees and My Judgements, and not commit any of these abominations--the native or the proselyte who lives among you. For the inhabitants of the Land who are before you committed all these abominations, and the Land became contaminated. Let not the Land disgorge you for having contaminated it, as it disgorged the nation that was before you. For if anyone commits any of these abominations, the people doing so will be cut off from among their people. You shall safeguard My Charge not to do any of the abominable traditions that were done before you and not contaminate yourselves through them; I Am Hashem, your Judge." (Leviticus 18:24-30).

Do not intermarry with inhabitants of Land: "You shall not intermarry with them [the inhabitants of the Land]; you shall not give your daughter to his son and you shall not take his daughter for your son, for he will cause your child to turn away from after Me and they shall serve other judges; then Hashem's Wrath will burn against you, and He will destroy you quickly. Rather, so shall you do to them: Their altars shall you break apart; their pillars shall you smash; their sacred trees shall you cut down; and their carved images shall you burn in fire." (Deuteronomy 7:3-5). Such will be done to the arabs in Israel, that they should not remain in the Land; lest they lead Israel astray and cause G-d to Reject His people. "You shall observe all My Decrees and all My Ordinances and perform them; then the Land to which I Bring you to dwell will not disgorge you. Do not follow the traditions of the nation that I Expel from before you, for they did all of these and I Was Disgusted with them. So I Said to you: You shall inherit their land, and I Will Give it to you to inherit it, a Land flowing with milk and honey--I Am Hashem, your Judge, Who Has Separated you from the peoples." (Leviticus 20:22-24).

Sexual Purity: "Hashem Spoke to Moses and Aaron, Saying: Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: Any man who will have a discharge from his flesh, his discharge is contaminated. Thus shall be his contamination when he discharges: whether his flesh runs with his discharge or it becomes stopped up because of his discharge, that is his contamination. Any bedding upon which the person with the discharge will recline shall be contaminated, and any vessel upon which he will sit shall become contaminated. A person who will touch his bedding shall immerse his garments and immerse himself in the water, and he remains contaminated until the evening. And one who sits upon a vessel upon which the man with the discharge will sit, shall immerse his garments and immerse himself in the water, and he remains contaminated until the evening.

"One who touches the flesh of the man with the discharge shall immerse his garments and immerse himself in the water, and he remains contaminated until the evening. If the person with the discharge will spit upon a pure person, he shall immerse his garments and immerse himself in the water, and he remains contaminated until the evening. Any riding equipment upon which the person with the discharge will ride shall become contaminated. And whoever touches anything that will be beneath him shall become contaminated until evening; and whoever carries them shall immerse his garments and immerse himself in the water, and he remains contaminated until the evening. Whomever the man with the discharge touches without having rinsed his hands in the water shall immerse his garments and immerse himself in the water, and he remains contaminated until the evening. Pottery that the man with the discharge will touch shall be broken; and any wooden utensil shall be rinsed in water.

"When the man with the discharge ceases his discharge, he shall count for himself seven days from his cessation, immerse his garments and immerse his flesh in spring water, and become purified. On the eighth day he shall take for himself two turtledoves or two young doves; he shall come before Hashem to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and give them to the Kohen. The Kohen shall make them one as a sin-offering and one as a burnt-offering--thus the Kohen shall provide him atonement before Hashem from his discharge." (Leviticus 15:1-15). The matter of a discharge that is not semen is considered a contamination that would either infect or contaminate other people. Since people didn't shower every day in that time and their flesh was exposed beneath their robes, then their contamination was taken more seriously. Nonetheless, a person with such a contamination should be careful not to touch or expose his contamination to a pure person; he should remain in isolation that the children of Israel should not be contaminated because of him.

"A man from whom there is a discharge of semen shall immerse his entire flesh in the water and remain contaminated until evening. Any garment or anything of leather, upon which there shall be semen, shall be immersed in the water and remain contaminated until evening. A woman with whom a man will have carnal relations, they shall immerse themselves in the water and remain contaminated until evening." (Leviticus 15:16-18). For a discharge of semen he shall wash himself and any contaminated clothing and remain contaminated until evening, for he is unclean because of it. When he has carnal relations with a woman, both become contaminated, and must wash themselves and remain contaminated until evening.

"When a woman has a discharge--her discharge from her flesh being blood--she shall be in her state of separation for a seven day period and anyone who touches her shall remain contaminated until evening. Anything upon which she may recline during her state of separation shall become contaminated; and anything upon which she sits shall become contaminated. Anyone who touches her bedding shall immerse his garments and immerse himself in the water, and he remains contaminated until evening. Anyone who touches any object upon which she will sit shall immerse his garments and immerse himself in the water, and he remains contaminated until evening. Or if someone is upon the bedding or the object upon which she is sitting, when he touches it, he becomes contaminated until evening. If a man lies with her, then her state of separation will be upon him and he becomes contaminated for a seven-day period; any bedding upon which he may recline shall become contaminated." (Leviticus 15:19-24). Today, however, women wear tampons and their contamination remains with them--it does not spill or leak on other things, except perhaps on their under-clothes or bedding. Anyone who comes in contact with her contamination must wash himself and remain contaminated until evening. And a person who touches her will become contaminated, for her contamination is upon her--she should not touch people in her state of separation. A man who would lie with her would become contaminated like her, for a seven-day period. "...He will have bared her source and she has bared the source of her blood; the two of them will be cut off from the midst of their people." (Leviticus 20:18). They will remain in isolation for the course of their contamination.

"If a woman's blood flows for many days outside of her period of separation, or if she has a flow after her separation, all the days of her contaminated flow shall be like the days of her separation; she is contaminated. Any bedding upon which she may lie throughout the days of her flow shall be to her like the bedding of her state of separation; any vessel upon which she may sit shall be contaminated, like the contamination of her separation. Anyone who touches them shall be contaminated; he shall immerse his garments and immerse himself in the water, and he remains contaminated until evening. If she ceases her flow, she must count seven days for herself, and afterwards she can be purified. On the eighth day she shall take for herself two turtledoves or two doves; she shall bring them to the Kohen, to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. The Kohen shall make one a sin-offering and one a burnt-offering; the Kohen shall provide atonement for her before Hashem from her contaminating flow." (Leviticus 15:25-28). This is only for the unusual case of a flow outside of her separation, which is considered like the flow of her separation, but must be atoned for.

"You shall separate the children of Israel from their contamination; and they shall not die as a result of their contamination if they contaminate My Tabernacle that is among them. This is the Teaching concerning the man with a discharge, and from whom there is a seminal discharge, through which he becomes contaminated; and concerning a woman who suffers through her separation, and concerning a person who has his flow, whether male or female, and concerning a man who lies with a contaminated woman." (Leviticus 15:31-33). It is important to be pure before Hashem, lest you contaminate His Temple and the Spirit of G-d Rejects you. For if Israel is to be a nation of G-d, it must be Holy, and Pure of heart and of body.

Purification of the camp: "Hashem Spoke to Moses, Saying, 'Command the children of Israel that they shall expel from the camp everyone with a leprous mark, everyone with a discharge, and everyone contaminated by a human corpse. Male and female alike shall you expel, to the outside of the camp shall you expel them, so that they should not contaminate their camps, among which I Dwell.' The children of Israel did so: They expelled them to the outside of the camp, as Hashem had Spoken to Moses--so did the children of Israel do." (Numbers 5:1-4). These people would camp outside of the camp until they became pure. In Israel the state of isolation will be within the person's home and as a restriction upon the freedom of behavior--that a contaminated person not contaminate those around him or her. Only in a rare case would it be like a quarantine. For the Land to be Pure, it must be clean of contamination; lest G-d Reject us and His Spirit not Dwell amongst us; for we would have removed ourselves from Him and profaned our nation.

Male and female clothing: "Male garb shall not be on a woman, and a man shall not wear a woman's garment, for anyone who does so is an abomination of Hashem." (Deuteronomy 22:5).

No promiscuity or harlotry: "There shall not be a promiscuous woman among the daughters of Israel, and there shall not be a promiscuous man among the sons of Israel. You shall not bring a harlot's hire or the exchange for a dog to the House of Hashem, your Judge." (Deuteronomy 23:18-19). For the people to be pure, they must behave that way--there should be no promiscuous person among the children of Israel, lest they lower themselves to behave like dogs. Nor shall there be harlotry in Israel, that people exchange filth amongst themselves and bring a harlot's wage to the House of G-d. For Hashem is the Judge of Israel; He is The Ruler of the Land and we are residents with Him. Our contamination is a shame to Him and to His Holy Name. We must greatly beware, for if we would profane Him by our behavior, then we would suffer all the curse of our sin and live in the darkness of corruption.

Seduce virgin, marry her: "If a man shall seduce a virgin who was not betrothed and lie with her, he shall provide her with a marriage contract as his wife. If her father refuses to give her to him, he shall weigh out silver according to the marriage contract of the virgins." (Exodus 22:15-16). This way the virgins of Israel will remain chaste; that they should not be defiled. If the girl consents to the relationship then she consents to the marriage, and if the man will seduce her he will take responsibility for his action, to redeem her. If the father refuses to let them marry, then his daughter will be shamed on his account--he will not profit off this, as women will not be bought or sold. Should the father take money as compensation, this can be seen as harlotry. But if they are young or the man is unable to provide for the girl, and the father consents to let them marry, then she will remain in her father's house until they are ready to live together. They will be considered as husband and wife, and the vows of marriage will apply to them.

Designated woman: "If a man lies carnally with a woman, and she is a slavewoman who has been designated for another man, and who has not been redeemed, or freedom has not been granted her; there shall be an investigation--they shall not be put to death, for she has not been freed. He shall bring his guilt-offering to Hashem, to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, a ram guilt-offering. The Kohen shall provide him atonement with the ram guilt-offering before Hashem for the sin that he had committed; and the sin that he had committed shall be forgiven him." (Leviticus 19:20-22). If a girl is married or her relationship is considered like marriage, while she is in her father's house, but her husband betrayed her or left her to wait and he did not redeem her, then the matter should be investigated, and she would not be punished for an insincerity since the vows of marriage had been broken, and she was innocent. And if a man would leave his wife for a long period of time and not tell her, or a man would be missing in action for a long period of time and it is not known if he survived, then his wife would not be punished for her insincerity; she would be considered divorced.

Curse of mamzer: "A mamzer shall not enter the congregation of Hashem, even his tenth generation shall not enter the congregation of Hashem." (Deuteronomy 23:3). A person born of an adulterous, incestuous, or casual relationship (that's not righted in marriage), is considered a curse amongst his people--for he was born in sin. He will be cut off from his people and cannot enter the congregation of Hashem, even until his tenth generation, because of what he is, how he came to be, and because he was brought up in sin--in defiance of Hashem. This is the severity of a Forbidden relationship--it is Forbidden in Israel and its scar is a curse upon the people--that its remnant must be cut off from their presence.

Rape case: "If a man will find a virgin maiden who was not betrothed, and takes hold of her and lies with her, and they are discovered, then the man who lay with her shall give the father of the girl fifty silver [shekels], and she shall become his wife; because he had afflicted her, he cannot divorce her all his days." (Deuteronomy 22:28-29). If a man rapes a girl, and it is a Forbidden relationship, then the rapist will die and the girl is innocent. But if a man rapes a virgin then he must marry her, unless she is not willing. Since he afflicted her and held her at his mercy, he is indebted to her and will be at her mercy. For what he did he should die, but if the girl is willing to marry him and right his wrongs, then he is forgiven on her behalf. Or if the virgin should become pregnant, she might concede to marry him for the sake of her child. If they are married, he cannot divorce her all his life, because he had afflicted her.

War captive: "When you will go to war against your enemies, and Hashem, your G-d, Will Deliver him into your hand, and you will capture his captivity; and you will see among its captivity a woman who is beautiful of form, and you will desire her, you may take her to yourself for a wife. You shall bring her to the midst of your house; she shall shave her head and let her nails grow. She shall remove the garment of her captivity from upon herself and sit in your house and she shall weep for her father and her mother for a full month; thereafter you may come to her and live with her, and she shall be a wife to you. But it shall be that if you do not desire her, then you shall send her on her own, but you may not sell her for money; you shall not enslave her, because you have afflicted her." (Deuteronomy 21:10-14). It is Forbidden to rape even the daughter of your enemy--even your war captive--for it would be a sin upon you and a curse upon Israel. You can take her as a wife, but let her not be treated like a slave. All this is to remove you from your lust, that you should see her in her affliction--for if you would still want her then, and she has become accustomed to you...only then would it be proper for you to live with her and take her as a wife; and she would become a part of Israel and live according to the Laws of G-d.
